The Oldest Olive Tree in the World: A Living Testament to Crete's Rich Heritage

This ancient olive tree, considered a natural monument, is believed to be one of the oldest living olive trees on Earth. Its massive trunk, measuring 4.9 meters in diameter and 14.20 meters in circumference, tells a tale of centuries of growth and resilience.

In Crete, olive trees and their precious oil have been deeply intertwined with mythology, history, and everyday life for over 9,000 years. Today, olive groves cover nearly a quarter of the island, sustaining local communities and contributing to Crete's unique landscape.

This extraordinary olive tree, located near the ancient settlements of Vrontas, Kastro, and Azoria, is thought to have been planted between 1350 and 1100 BC.  Its longevity and proximity to these archaeological sites, where artifacts related to olive oil production have been discovered, underscore the tree's historical significance.

You can find this magnificent olive tree about 10 kilometers from Mochlos. Follow the main road towards Agios Nikolaos, and at the entrance of Kavousi, take the first left after a small bridge. Look for the signs indicating "Old Olive Tree" to guide you to this living testament to Crete's rich olive oil heritage.
